The territory of today’s Papua New Guinea was the place of fierce fights during World War II. Stationed in the northern part of the country the Japanese troops carried out regular air strikes on the southern areas controlled by allied forces. Mementos of these historical events are the numerous wrecks to be found in the waters around Papua. Among them is a Japanese Mitsubishi Zero fighter which was discovered in 2002 in the waters of Kimbe Bay.
